Health claims based on biomarkers, such as cholesterol as a predictor of heart disease, would be permitted under a new policy guideline endorsed last month by the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council.
The guideline on nutrition, health and related claims has been forwarded to Food Standards Australia New Zealand for consideration under the two countries' joint Food Standards Code. It would require pre-market assessment and approval by FSANZ of all health maintenance and enhancement claims based on biomarkers, and of any references to serious disease.
