(Paris) The president of the major French defense firm responsible for manufacturing the Leclerc tank, said last month that his company is near the breaking point, according to a letter that he wrote to the country's defense minister.
In the August 7 letter to French Defense Minister Pierre Joxe, GIAT chief Pierre Chiquet says his corporation is on the verge of collapse. If something is not done soon to prevent it, Chiquet told Joxe, GIAT could close its doors by 1995. Chiquet went so far as to offer up his own resignation as well as those of his company's principal officers.
The letter was released Tuesday by a powerful French labor union.
