IT IS entirely appropriate that Helmut Newton, the fashion photographer who fled Nazi Germany and achieved worldwide fame for his sexually charged portraits of seminaked women, should crash his Cadillac and die within yards of the gates of Hollywood's legendary Chateau Marmont hotel.
For Newton invented the fashion for 'porno chic' which earned him a reputation for sexual excess and mystery - elevating the damned and the demimonde images he created into a seemingly stylish world out of reach of the common man.
