Let it be noted at the outset that this book has nothing to do with Miguel Hidalgo or the first revolt for Mexican independence that he initiated in 1810. The reference is merely to a lingering "spirit" of independence a century later in Mexico's third largest state, Coahuila, and its long-term aspiration to local autonomy. The adoption of inspired main titles that provide no clue as to the subject of the book has become a bad habit in academic publishing.
