On January 23, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) gave his approval for the General Accounting Office to receive information from the IRS to assist with the General Accounting Office's (GAO) review of accounting firms that sell tax shelters to their audit clients. Ranking Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations member Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) requested the GAO review, and Grassley gave his permission for the GAO to proceed in contacting the IRS for the information.
