After rejecting the company's proposed contract, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 538 vote 400-9 to strike. The union earlier in the month had filed an unfair labor practice charge against the company with the National Labor Relations Board for failure to bargain in good faith.

Tyson Foods hires temporary workers to maintain the operations of the Jefferson plant.
