PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- As the number of obese individuals in the United States continues to rise, hospitals are faced with increased demand for bariatric procedures that help such patients reduce their weight through surgery. Nearly 65,000 people underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2002, according to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. However, some types of bariatric surgery carry a 1 in 200 mortality rate, and other common surgical procedures, such as gallbladder surgery, can also carry heightened risks and special technology needs when performed on obese patients.
