Volkswagen and Opel are fighting an incentives war over the new Golf and Astra in Europe's No. 1 market.
The two German automakers are keen not to lose ground in the key lower-medium segment.
Golf buyers in Germany who trade in a non-VW car can receive a [euro]1,000 discount.
Opel is offering a [euro]1,085 discount package on popular extras to buyers who order an Astra before the model's March 19 launch date.
Offering such deals on new models - in Astra's case before the car is even launched - is highly unusual.
