Jan. 30--Verizon Wireless widened its lead as the largest US cellphone carrier, adding 1.5 million customers in the fourth quarter to reach 37.5 million, according to company results released yesterday.

The results exceeded most analysts' growth forecasts and bolstered predictions of Verizon as the big winner under federal "number portability" rules that took effect Nov. 24 allowing wireless customers to keep their phone numbers when switching carriers.
