WASHINGTON -- New Hampshire may soon get out of a federal mandate requiring refiners to use oxygenates like methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) or ethanol to make gasoline burn cleaner, a move that is raising new uncertainties and concerns for the oil industry already worried about supply constraints.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week announced that it is proposing to let New Hampshire opt out of the oxygen mandate for areas with severe smog problems. EPA said it could allow New Hampshire to implement its own fuel program known as "Oxygen Flexible Reformulated Program."
