In mid-July 1995, Chicago experienced a meteorological and social catastrophe: a seven-day heat wave that caused the deaths of approximately 739 people, most of whom were old, ill, poor, and alone. A disproportionate percentage was African-American. Heat wave presents a solidly grounded and theoretically complex analysis of the social, economic, and political context of this tragedy using the methodological strategy of a 'social autopsy'. ...
