IT BEGGARS belief that Scottish Opera, surely one of the icons of Celtic culture, should find itself on the ropes financially just as it picks up a prestigious South Bank Show award for its spectacular Ring Cycle.
Despite an almost invisible presence in England and Wales in recent memory, the Glasgow- based company has a loyal following amongst opera buffs south of the border.
Its stature was further enhanced by the news that is celebrated musical director Richard Armstrong has been knighted. The heather should be blooming in the gloaming. It isn't.
