The conservative Guardians Council bans at least 80 of the current 290 MPs from standing for re-election on Feb. 20 along with thousands of other candidates. Pres. Khatami later condemned the decision, suggesting it was contrary to the wishes of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who appoints the 12-member council. Khatami said: "It's meaningless that prominent figures who have worked for the nation for years have not been approved".
