High-performance conductive ceramic membranes and thick film surface coatings based on nanoscale technology have been designed for applications in solid oxide fuel cells and battery electrodes by Ionotec, Runcorn, Cheshire, England. The company manufactures ion-conductive ceramics tailored to individual application requirements. These products are mostly based on beta double-prime alumina, a hard polycrystalline ceramic in which the mobile ion may be N[a.sup.+], [K.sup.+], A[g.sup.+], [H.sup.+], P[b.sup.2+], S[r.sup.2+], or B[a.sup.2+].
