LORANE - Twenty years ago, Lorane Elementary School teacher Carroll Noel helped hoist a totem pole, newly carved by the school's fourth-grade class, onto its base across the gravel driveway from the little red schoolhouse.
It was sheer serendipity that placed the recently retired Noel back at Lorane on Monday, beaming amid a scrum of middle schoolers raising a second totem pole. This pole replaced the first, which, having rotted out, crumbled one day three years ago after someone backed a car into it.
