Nov. 28--The distinguished older gentleman stepped onto the jade-green outfield of the downtown ballpark. His wingtips whispered across the freshly cut grass.
His eyes wandered over the exposed steel latticework holding up the seating bowl and the slender light towers standing guard over the upper decks. He folded his arms and slowly nodded.
Gary Allen, who got his first look inside Petco Park recently, knows a thing or two about ballparks. He designed San Diego's first major one, today's Qualcomm Stadium, nearly four decades ago.
