Barley growers reap $53-million harvest
The 1991 barley harvest is underway, and Coors Brewing Co. announced plans to purchase record amounts from contract growers in four Rocky Mountain states, according to a brewery spokesperson.
More than 1,500 farmers grow Coors' special strains of barley - Moravian III and Triumph - at the higher elevations of Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. To honor those who provide Coors with the grain, the brewer annually hosts "Barley Field Days" each summer.
