Feb. 4--Ricin, a deadly natural poison, has been used effectively to commit murder but shows little potential for mass destruction, experts say.
Ricin comes from the castor bean plant, which is coveted by gardeners for its colorful starburst leaves and used in industry as a source for laxatives, industrial lubricants and plastics.
"Ricin really is an interesting compound because it's so available, but the beans are incredibly toxic," said Scott Sieburth, an organic and medicinal chemist at Temple University.
The process for making ricin is no secret.
