Four generations ago, a man who could handcraft a good-looking and functional spinning wheel most likely had no problem finding a wife.

The huge "walking wheels" or "great wheels" turned raw wool into yarn for knitting. It was a device of necessity, and the average woman would walk four or five miles a day as she persuaded fibers of fleece to become skeins for sweaters, mittens, rugs, blankets.
