In a speech in Prague on February 2, Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Pedro Solbes pinpointed three challenges facing the candidate countries in preparing to join the Euro-zone. He suggested the future Member States need to further prepare their economies to join the European Union. To this end, the candidates joining the EU on May 1 must press on with structural reforms on the labour, capital and product markets. They must also reform and consolidate their public finances, notably to avoid budgetary imbalances. Finally, the future EU Member States need a firm framework for financial supervision.
