The outlook for local agriculture grows uncertain
Even with encroaching suburban sprawl and the storied plight of farmers and ranchers, agriculture remains a strong part of the economies of San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
But how much longer it will remain a leading industry is uncertain, said agriculture officials in the two counties.
One problem is that many heads of the family farms and ranches are nearing retirement age and their children are choosing not to continue in the business, which entails long hours in the hot sun and uncertain financial returns.
