It was undoubtedly a coincidence, but as David Ortiz was conducting a teleconference yesterday in the wake of his recent contractual agreement, the Red Sox were completing the final contractual formalities with a man who may effectively serve as Ortiz' platoon partner.
Having agreed in principle to a one-year deal for an estimated $750,000, the right-handed-hitting Ellis Burks cleared the final hurdle in his negotiations with the Sox by passing a physical exam. Burks, who broke into the majors with the Red Sox in 1987, is expected to be on hand at Fenway Park today when the Sox announce his signing.
