Time and again, a TV camera cuts to Jacques Lemaire, and as if on cue, the look is the same. A glimmer in his eye, a smile/grimace on his face, gum ("the yellow kind") pinched between his teeth.
He ditched bubble gum long ago; the clunky chew was wearing out his jaw.
"It hurt bad," he said. "Now I've got the idea."
Each night he fishes one piece out of the locker-room gum basket and with his finger divides it into thirds. He pops one-third into his mouth, the remaining two-thirds into his suit jacket pocket. One for each period.
