Renee Bux is making strides to enjoy life as an 8-year-old.
After surgery last summer to help her speech, she is in a mainstream second-grade class this year at Robert Crown School in Wauconda, said her mother Joy Bux.
But the family is concerned, Bux said. Renee was born with congenital myotonic dystrophy, a form of muscular dystrophy. Those who suffer from it develop adult onset symptoms after puberty.
"She has challenges now, but more are yet to come," she said.
That is why the family is helping raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for research.
