Feb. 7--Bad teams and all-too-often empty seats led Madison Square Garden yesterday to fire about 80 workers -- nearly 4 percent of its staff.

A Garden official said the cuts are primarily in the corporate and administrative area.

"Madison Square Garden will undertake a restructuring to ensure it operates with maximum efficiency," said Barry Watkins, the spokesman. "We do not expect the customer experience to be affected."

Watkins would not tie the layoffs to revenue losses at the Garden and declined to comment beyond a one-paragraph statement he issued at ...
