An 8-year-old Dorchester boy who was home from school alone yesterday accidentally set his apartment house ablaze, trapping neighbors who might have died if not for the hero cop who braved the flames to save them.
"You do what you have to," said Boston police officer Keith Callow, 35, "especially when you hear children are involved."
The son of Dominicana Garcia, a nursing home aide neighbors said was probably at work when the fire broke out, was not the only youth absent from classes when the four-family residence at 45 Adams St. began to burn about 12:30 p.m.
