Margarita Carmen Dolores Cansino began to dance about the same time she learned to walk. When she was born in New York City on 17 October 1918, her parents, Volga Hayworth and Eduardo Cansino (she of Irish descent and he a Spaniard from Seville), were living in a hotel near the Palace Theater where Eduardo and his sister Elisa were performing as the Dancing Cansinos. Young Margarita was such a good dancer that she would soon join the troupe. Although painfully shy, she came alive before all audience--but with little hint that the pretty, dark-haired girl would grow into a startlingly beautiful woman dubbed the Love Goddess by Hollywood.
