I believe we are celebrating 100 years of GIS. But how can this be, when most histories date GIS to the late 1960s?
The answer is that in March 2004, the Association of American Geographers (AAG) will hold its centennial meeting in Philadelphia. And the history of AAG also is the history of GIS. Many of the ideas behind GIS were developed by geographers and presented at AAG meetings, discussed in its journals or influenced by leaders in AAG and related organizations.
