Feb. 7--On Friday, it was 2,800 tons of cable, neatly coiled in the belly of a ship berthed in Seward. Next spring, it'll be stretched out under the sea, providing Alaska with another high-speed communications link to the Lower 48.
Anchorage-based General Communication Inc. is paying $50 million to install the 1,544-mile fiber-optic cable, which initially will have the ability to carry more than 258,000 simultaneous voice or data connections.
Should the need arise, the new line's carrying capacity can be increased to support more than 8 million ...
