Feb. 8--Aquaculture is making steady progress in Rhode Island, as growers gain experience and skills, and as state government becomes supportive rather than hostile.

Aquaculture embraces just about anything that grows in water, including plants, but at present, since growing finfish has hit a dead end, the only revenue-producing aquaculture in Rhode Island is raising shellfish -- mostly oysters -- and it has a long history.
