Long before she inspired controversy in the New World, Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson was a wife and mother in England. Anne married William Hutchinson when she was twenty-one years old. William came from a successful merchant family in Alford, Anne's childhood hometown. The Marburys and the Hutchinsons had been neighbors there. Although Anne's family had a more prestigious history than William's, his wealth provided them with a comfortable new home in Alford.
