In a lush garden ripe with mangoes, a young Tahitian girl peers over her shoulder as a nude older woman huddles in shadow beside her. In the opposite corner, a sleeping newborn bathed in sunlight turns toward an unclear future.
Paul Gauguin called it his greatest work, and it's among the most prized paintings in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts.
Now Gauguin's three-panel, 12-foot-long painting, "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" is the centerpiece of a major exhibit exploring the artist's work in Tahiti. The show opens at the MFA - the only U.S. venue for the exhibit - on Feb. 29.
