Feb. 12--Northwest Airlines' new daily service set to begin June 10 between Portland and Tokyo will be its first new trans-Pacific operation in five years, airline executives said Wednesday.

Phil Haan, an executive vice president for the Minnesota-based airline, said the commitment to the Portland connection is unique in the aftermath of a global economic downturn, terrorist attacks, the Iraq war and the SARS scare.
