The Beacon Hill gay marriage debate raged on last night with a civil unions compromise on the rocks as Republicans balked and openly gay lawmakers made personal appeals to their colleagues not to relegate them to second-class citizenry.
House and Senate lawmakers abruptly broke off debate at 9 p.m., retreating to private caucuses to regroup after it appeared the votes weren't there to pass a leadership compromise that would have banned gay marriage while creating civil unions.
