Feb. 16--Toyota started selling cars in the United States in 1958, with the $1,995 Toyopet Crown sedan, but it was the opening of the NUMMI plant in Fremont in 1984 that really started the Japanese automaker on the road to its tremendous U.S. success.

"NUMMI was a critical turning point in our business," said Fujio Cho, president of Toyota Motor.
