As USDA completes its periodic review of national dietary guidelines, the U.S. food industry is urging not only that the guidelines be science-based, but also that they be easy to understand and implement. In recent testimony before the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, National Food Processors Association official Bob Earl also said it is important that the guidelines trigger behavioral changes. "The goal should be to motivate and stimulate action on diet and lifestyle by consumers," he said. "Unless this goal is reached, the Dietary Guidelines will not be effective."
