TAC air defense forces train in Gulf of Mexico. (Tactical Air Command)

The Tactical Air Command's air defense forces faced "hostile" threats last month when pilots found themselves charged with protecting the US southeastern coast from an invading red force during Copper Flag '91.

Copper Flag is a joint US-Canadian Air Force exercise designed to train air defense forces against air-breathing threats to North America. The two-week exercise, managed from and flown above Tyndall AFB, involved more than 700 people, including air crews, maintenance personnel, weapons controllers and battle managers.
