Feb. 16--Scientists don't know exactly how long salmon have been around.
The species, scholars say, might have branched off from other fish about 100 million years ago, possibly living with dinosaurs during the last few million years of the dinosaurs' reign.
While many unknowns surround salmon, everyone agrees on one thing: The species' population has declined dramatically in the last century.
In the early 1900s, commercial fishermen kept a tally of their salmon catch, recording anywhere from 400,000 to 500,000 fish a year in Puget Sound, said ...
