1. Barbecue sheds. Pick one: The Salt Lick (25 minutes outside Austin in Driftwood) is a middle-of-nowhere, BYOB ranch house that's legendary. More hardcore meat-lovers drive to Kreuz's in nearby Lockhart, where silverware, plates and sauce are not required, or even available.

2. Barton Springs pool. The famous, spring-fed swimming hole and its adjoining creek were a battleground for environmentalists warding off pollution in the 1990s. The war was won, and the always 68-degree waters are as clear and cold as ever. Try the free evening swim from 9 to 10 p.m. (In Zilker Park off Barton Springs Road.)
