Valentine's Day is brought to us courtesy of the greeting card, flower, candy, jewelry, restaurant and telecommunications industries. Pardon my cynicism, but all the Valentine's Day hype recently bombarding us seems to me to be motivated by the need to boost first-quarter profits rather than any particular concern over the state of our relationships.
Now, from what I can find out, Valentine's Day began as an early Christian holiday honoring two 5th Century church martyrs, both named Valentinus, who are supposed to have died on Feb. 14. One was a Roman priest, the other a bishop, or so goes the legends.
