Crowding squeezes bilingual students.(News)

Crowding in Elgin Area School District U-46 classrooms could stunt the progress of some Spanish-speaking students who are poised to move into English-only classes, educators say.

Limited space in mainstream classes no longer allows for groups of bilingual students to rotate in for math or science lessons, as had been U-46's practice. That practice ended last spring when the district decided to fill each class with an average 30 students, a $13.4 million cost-saving measure.

Nearly a year later, the ripple effects of such a financial reckoning have become apparent.
