For the liquid phase market, 2003 was anything but spectacular. After recording robust double-digit growth only a few years earlier, manufacturers saw a 6.0% market increase in 2003--a respectable number, but not the blockbuster expansion many in the instrument industry had been hoping for. Although capital spending and research funding has begun to show signs of revival in the last year, stable recovery tends to be a slow process in most industries, and the analytical instrument industry is no exception.
