An expectant right whale has been struck and killed by a ship in coastal waters for the second time in five months, raising fears among scientists that the most-endangered whale species again may be sliding toward extinction.
"Right whales are still getting killed at unsustainable rates," said Scott Kraus, head of the New England Aquarium's right whale research team. "One day there won't be any more bodies on the beaches. The ocean will be a lonelier place, and we will be vastly poorer for it."
Only about 325 right whales remain in the North Atlantic.
