Over the last few years, a number of studies have documented the reduced risk and incidence of coronary heart disease in consumers who drink alcoholic beverages, and specifically wine, in moderation. Two recent studies conducted at Cornell and Harvard universities shed more light on why this protective effect is observed in moderate consumers. The Cornell study identifies new compounds in wine with significant cholesterol lowering effects and the Harvard study highlights the mechanism of ethanol's potential effect in raising key cholesterol compounds responsible for a reduced risk of coronary heart disease.
