Syracuse-native Brian P. McLane celebrated his retirement from the state Education Department Saturday, ending a chapter in a life dedicated to improving conditions for people with disabilities.
McLane, who has cerebral palsy and severe scoliosis, remembers traveling to New York City in the late 1970s as senior executive assistant to former Assemblyman Mel Zimmer.
At that time, sidewalks did not have curb cuts. So at every intersection, Zimmer would set down his luggage and lower McLane's wheelchair over the curb.
After crossing the intersection, Zimmer would then lift McLane's wheelchair back ...
