Akzo Nobel is planning to add 100,000 m.t./year of chlorine capacity at its Botlek complex near Rotterdam, the Netherlands, CW has learned. The expansion is due to be completed in mid-2005, and it should raise the total at the site to 570,000 m.t./year. "We are expecting the environmental permits and board approval for the project in the second quarter," says Rene Scheffers, president/base chemicals. The project will cost about 40 million [euro] ($50 million), and will use Asahi Kasei membrane cell technology, Scheffers says. Engineering will be carried out in-house, he says.
