Feb. 20--TAMPA, Fla. -- Scientists have found evidence of the violence caused by a cosmic monster known as a black hole, and this one is ravenous.
The massive object was detected devouring a star that wandered too close and began disintegrating under the hole's gravitational force. Astronomers who observed the event using powerful telescopes say it provides crucial evidence on how black holes affect the space around them.
The discovery also could help solve riddles about the nature of gravity itself, said Carol Williams, professor of astronomy at the University of South Florida.
