Opera Colorado artistic director James Robinson shifted La Boheme from 1830s Paris to 1914 Paris, stating that the change would bring focus to the characters as they lost their innocence in a modern world that was doing the same.
It's a nice thought. But Puccini's tale of Bohemian passion is not so much about "where" or "when," as "who." It's about lovers struggling mightily to remain lovers.
