TAMPA, Fla. -- The equipment manager was walking fast, carrying something in his palm and heading toward a locker near the back of the New York Yankees clubhouse.
"UPS just delivered this," he said.
It was a nameplate. Spring training is replete with nameplates, what with minor leaguers and nonroster players invited to camp wearing numbers associated with football linemen. But this nameplate was, well, historic, even by the standards of the Yankees, steeped as they are in a glorious past.
