When I moved into my house some years ago, I was thrilled to find a tart cherry tree in the back yard. I didn't know you could grow a cherry tree in a back yard, so you can imagine what a cool discovery this was.
Get out the hankie, though; the story has a sad ending. The first year, I had a bumper crop; the second year, I had a meager crop; the third year, well, those who remember the freak September storm of '95 can guess what happened. The tree passed away, as dead as if young George himself had taken the ax to it.
